IKEA's New App Lets You Test Out Virtual Furniture Before You Buy It

Buying furniture isn't always as easy as it sounds - not least if you happen to live in a metropolis where a cupboard under the stairs counts as a luxury studio apartment.

But thanks to IKEA's 2014 Catalogue App, that might just get a bit easier in future.

The new app allows you to place virtual furniture in your room via the wonders of augmented reality and a smartphone camera, to find the perfect fit. It uses the actual catalogue as a guide, measuring the size and position of the book and then overlaying your sofa, or whatever, on top.

There are 90 products available to try, letting you get a rough idea of the size and dimensions of whatever you're going to buy. All they need now is a version that will help you work out if the flat packs are going to fit in your car to get it all home.

The new app will hit the Apple and Google app stores on 25 August.
