Scientists have developed a hybrid clone of a rabbit and jellyfish which is able to glow in the dark.
Turkish researchers used a technique developed at the University of Hawaii to produce the normal-looking white rabbits, which glow green under a black light.
Known as "active transgenisis", the technique involves injecting a protein from jellyfish DNA into an embryo in the lab. The embryos are inserted back into a mother rabbit, and develop normally. When born, two of the eight altered rabbits were able to glow in the dark light.
The aim eventually is to be able to introduce different, beneficial genes into rabbits and collect the proteins in their milk. It is hoped this method might help scientists find new ways to make medicines.
