'We Are Devastated': Father Of British Woman Whose Foot Was Severed Flies To Her Bedside

The father of a British tourist whose foot was severed by a runaway taxi, is preparing to fly to New York to comfort his daughter.

Sian Green was struck by the vehicle on the first day of a "dream" holiday in the city on Tuesday.

On Wednesday her father Jason told the Leicester Mercury: "We are a really close family and we are all devastated by what has happened.

"We don't know what to say. We just want to be at our daughter's side right now. She is in recovery now and they have had to amputate what's left of her foot."

Police are investigating whether or not Green's injuries were caused by a road rage incident.

The 23-year-old suffered the serious leg injury in the collision near the Rockefeller Centre on Sixth Avenue, midtown Manhattan, New York Police Department (NYPD) said.

Sergeant John Buthorn said: "The circumstances are still under investigation, whether it was some sort of rage or an accident.

"It looks like her leg or part of it was severed during the accident."

He said two other people - the driver and a cyclist involved in a collision which caused the taxi to veer on to the pavement - were treated for injuries.

The driver has not been arrested or charged, NYPD said.

Green is being treated in New York's Bellevue Hospital

It is believed Green had been in New York for just a few hours before she was injured.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of a traffic incident involving a British national in New York City. Staff at the British Consulate General in New York are providing consular assistance at this difficult time."

Green was said to be walking along the street with a friend eating a hot dog when the yellow taxi crashed into her.

Passers-by helped to fasten a bandage around the woman's legs to stem the bleeding, while others collected ice from street vendors to pack the severed leg.

Mohamed Elsayed, a 34-year-old food seller, told the Daily Telegraph: "It was a terrible scene. She was thrown into the bushes, she was screaming.

"Most of her leg was just there on the sidewalk, underneath the cab. We did all we could to help."

Green was also assisted by Mehmet Oz, a celebrity doctor in America who was filming in the area.

Dr Oz later praised plumber Dave Justino on Twitter for his "quick thinking" in tying his belt around the woman's leg and posted a photograph of himself and Justino on his Facebook page, writing: “With the help of NYC first responders, who are the best in the world, the woman was treated and rushed to a local hospital.
