A 51-year-old mum who breastfeeds her five-year-old daughter in public has told her critics: "I'll breastfeed until my daughter's 10 if that's what she wants."

Mum-of-three Maha Al Musa, a belly dancer from New South Wales, Australia, practises extended breastfeeding, where a mother allows the child to carry on feeding until they say they are ready to stop.

She told New magazine: "(My daughter) Aminah took to breastfeeding easily and the moment I felt that bond, I was instantly hooked."

So she still breastfeeds her daughter in public, whenever she asks for milk – and she doesn't care what anyone thinks.

"To this day, she is very rarely ill and her temperament is calmer and more relaxed than the other children," she said.

Maha weaned her two previous children, Kailash, 16, and Tariq, 13, off breast milk when they were two.
