F1 Driver Kubica Steps Up To Full Citroen Rally Team In Wales

Robert Kubica has been handed a works drive with Citroen for the final World Rally Championship event of the year in Wales.

The former Renault Formula One driver, who currently leads the WRC 2 championship, will get his chance with the French team's top-class car - the DS3 WRC - at Rally GB next month.

Robert Kubica is on the brink of a rally world title

In just his debut season in the WRC, Kubica has taken four category wins from the six rallies in which he has competed. He hopes to seal overall victory later this month at Rally Catalunya, where second place would be enough for him to win his first world title.

“This one-off outing for the works team is a great opportunity for me, but it’s also a huge challenge,” revealed Kubica. “Wales Rally GB wasn’t part of my original programme, so I’m very happy to be able to have this precious experience.”

Kubica's success comes as he continues to recover from the horrific crash in 2011 when he nearly lost a hand. He was competing in the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy when he crashed heavily, partially severing his right hand and suffering a number of fractures.

The severity of his injuries kept the popular Pole out of racing until 2012 when he made his return in rallying. It's not yet clear whether or not he will be able to return to F1.

Wales Rally GB runs from 14-17 November.
