A teacher has been struck off after telling his students "Hitler wasn't all bad - he killed the Jews, the gays and the disabled".

David McNally shocked students at Kilwinning Academy, Ayrshire in Scotland, informing them: "I love my mobile phone because I can sit and watch porn on it."

After pupils complained to their parents, his comments, which were made last November, were brought to the attention of the school. On Monday, the General Teaching Council (GTC) heard the teacher told his religious education class he would "rather have been a prison warden or a child abuser" than a teacher.

McNally, who did not attend the hearing, also asked pupils if they had had sex at the weekend and told them: "I have a part-time job at a Children’s Home – they have taught me how to whip a child with a wet towel without leaving a mark.”

The religious education and history teacher also made "inappropriate comments" about Jimmy Saville. McNally claimed he had made the remarks in a "general sense" after a "particularly bad day" - a defence which the GTC rejected.

McNally has been struck off the teaching register and cannot reapply for two years.

The GTC said: "The panel was satisfied that for [McNally] to have directed a question at a school pupil asking if they had sex at the weekend would have placed that child at risk of psychological harm.

"The Panel was of the view that the explanations by the Respondent did not reduce their gravity and considered that under any circumstances they were entirely inappropriate."
