Billionaire businessman Donald Trump has gifted $10,000 (£6,200) to bus driver Darnell Barton who coaxed a suicidal woman from a motorway bridge while he was on duty.

Mr Trump said: "I thought that was so beautiful to see. I think he is a great guy with an amazing heart and I said that man should be rewarded.

"Frankly, I'm very honoured to help him out ... The way he handled it was brilliant."

CCTV from the bus shows Mr Barton pulling over when he notices a young woman looking as if she was about to jump from the railings of a bridge.

He can be heard asking the woman if she is ok, before walking over to her and persuading her to come to safety where he then sits with her and waits until police arrive.

Barton told the Buffalo News that he could relate to woman’s despair.

“I looked at that woman on the overpass, and I could identify with her,” the 37-year-old Barton said.

When he saw her, a memory flashed into his mind from several years ago, when depression had driven him to despair.

“I was sitting on the edge of my bed, and in one hand I was holding a Bible and in the other a firearm. I said to God, ‘What are we going to do?’ I set down the firearm and put my face in my hands and started crying. Ever since then, it’s been destiny and having a mission."
