Piixl Jetpack: British-Made 'Steam Box' Is A Gaming PC Designed To Hide Behind Your TV

Is This 'Hidden' Living Room Gaming PC The Real Next Gen?

A British-made entrant into the race to build the first great gaming PC for the living room has laid a claim to one major feature that none of the next-gen consoles can boast: you can't really see it.

The Piixl Jetpack, spotted by Pocket-Lint, is a full-featured gaming PC running the new Seam OS, designed to fit in the gap between your flat-screen and the wall.

The Jetpack is thin enough to slide between a VESA wall mount on a 30- to 70-inch TV and the wall, without adding too much bulk to the set-up.

It's also designed to balance features and price, with an estimated cost of around £610, while still running some of the top specs in the gaming PC world (though these are still to be determined, as far as we can tell from the website).

Steam OS is a new initiative by Valve, the company behind games like Half-Life as well as the Steam online gaming store. The idea is to finally bring all the benefits of PC gaming - cheaper games, greater customisation, expandable hardware and often better graphics - into the living room.

"As we've been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we've come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself," Valve explains on its website.

But rather than making its own console, Valve has opened up the OS for a range of manufacturers to experiment with.

"SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines."

The Jetpack is just one of these machines - so it might be worth waiting to see which takes your fancy (and whether the extra cost over a PS4 or Xbox One is worth it for you). But if you're definitely sold, the Piixl will be out in January 2014.
