We've all seen the hoo-ha around shows like the finale of 'Breaking Bad', the fall of 'Sherlock', the shocking denouement in 'Broadchurch', the spattered blood of 'Game of Thrones'.

But when it comes to Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social engagement, it turns out it's another show that's caught the wind of praise, speculation and gossip.

According to data aggregator Starcount, it's 'The Walking Dead', AMC's hit zombie drama (starring our very own British export, Andrew Lincoln (Remember Egg in 'This Life'? That's him) that's come out on top. It was the most popular TV series on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram this year after the series gained more than 7 million new followers across the three networks.

And it was the winner by quite a fat margin, too. Behind 'The Walking Dead' were a trio of shows which were each liked by over 2.5 million new fans on Facebook this year; 'Breaking Bad', 'American Horror Story' and 'Game of Thrones'.
