A transgender student driven to the brink of suicide by bigoted bullies has had the last laugh over his tormentors after being crowned homecoming queen.
Steven Sanchez, 21, overcame prejudice to be voted the first transgender homecoming queen of the University of Northern Iowa in the US.

Sanchez, who performs under the name "Lola" at various campus events, landed the role after performing two songs as pop starlet Selena Gomez at the Homecoming Royalty Competition.
