Robot Sperm: Scientists Create Mechanical Swimmers Controlled By Magnetic Fields

Scientists have made the world's first robotic sperm.

The tiny cyborg swimmers are controlled using magnetic fields, and could have a range of interesting uses if the tech is perfected.

The hope is that using the robots - which are just 50 microns long, and 5-8 microns in diameter - scientists might be able to fertilise eggs with individual sperm cells - or send drugs to targeted areas, by remote control.

Oliver Schmidt at the Institute for Integrative Nanosciences in Dresden, Germany, led the work, which is described in full over at New Scientist and was published in Advanced Materials this week.
