Kate and Gerry McCann's hopes of being reunited with their daughter were once again dashed, as the girl seen in the remote Himalayan town of Leh proved to simply be a lookalike.
A British woman and an American man had seen the youngster last Friday, and said she was the spitting image of Madeleine. They were so certain it was her that they even tried to grab her away from the adults she was with.
Indian police officers subsequently confiscated the passports of the child's Belgian father and French mother, and organised DNA tests to confirm the girl's identity, which ultimately proved she was not Maddie.
Kate and Gerry's spokesman Clarence Mitchell said that the couple had concluded the girl was not Maddie once they had been shown photos of her:
'Kate and Gerry do not believe the child was Madeleine. They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her.'
