Shocking footage of a man lying in the middle of the road in the middle of the night has been released by police.
The man is motionless in the middle of the road in the Isle of Wight as a bus hurtles towards him.
The driver manages to slam on the brakes, with the bus stopping inches from the man, almost certainly sparing his life.
In the glare of headlights, he eventually clambers to his feet, before staggering into the roadside and sitting back down.
Hampshire Police released the footage, shot by a camera on board the bus, to warn people to take care on the roads and reminding drivers to "expect the unexpected".
The incident happened at 3.05am on Halletts Shute, Yarmouth, on October 5.
Sgt Dave Sanderson, from the Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit, told the Daily Echo: "The video shows the extraordinary danger the man put himself in.
“More significantly the danger he put everyone else in. Imagine the devastating impact this incident could have had on others if it were not for the amazing reactions of the bus driver."
