Asteroid 2014 AA Hits Earth (And Was The Second Rock Ever To Have Been Spotted Before It Landed)

Asteroid Hits Earth (Just Hours After We Found It)

We didn't have to wait long for the first asteroid of the 2014 - a sofa-sized rock hurtled through our atmosphere between 3 -10 pm on New Year's Day.

What made this one even more special is that it was only the second one ever to have been spotted before it made impact.

The Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona, captured these images.

As the first of the year the asteroid gained the designation 2014 AA.

Determining where it landed is tricky as the potential arc is from Central America to East Africa.

The most likely impact location of the object was just off the coast of West Africa.

Even so, Nasa say it is unlikely the asteroid survived entry intact as it was comparable in size to asteroid 2008 TC3, which was about 7 to 10 feet (2 to 3 meters).

2008 TC3 completely broke up over northern Sudan in October 2008 and is the only other example of an asteroid be spotted before entry.
