British Museum Google Doodle Celebrates 255th Anniversary Of London Landmark

Google Celebrates British Museum's 255th Birthday

Google is marking the 255th anniversary of the British Museum with its latest Google Doodle.

The temporary 'Google' logo is visible on the home page of the search engine, and on Google Now.

The museum was established in 1753 after Sir Hans Sloane bequeathed his mountainous collection of antiquities, curiosities and historical artefacts to King George II.

The first exhibition and reading room opened at Montagu House, with an already massive hoard of 71,000 objects and 48,000 books and manuscripts.

The British Museum has since grown to be one of the largest and most popular museums in London, famous for its collection of Egyptian mummies and treasures from Anglo Saxon England.

More than 6.7 million visitors came to the museum in 2013 - its most successful year ever, and up 20 percent on 2012.
