This Beautiful 'Planetarium' Watch Will Put The Solar System On Your Wrist

Now that everyone has a smartphone in their pocket, the humble watch seems something of an anachronism.

But regardless of the technological utility, wrist watches still have their fans - and not just because some of them now have email alerts.

And now we've seen a watch which might drag us back into the old-school fold. For not only does it display the time on Earth, it also show's what's going on in almost the entire solar system.

The Van Cleef & Aprels 'Complication Poétique Midnight Planétarium' watch contains a model of the six planets closest to our Sun, each represented with a precious stone.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are each rendered inside the 44mm 18kt rose gold case in aventurine, serpentine, chloromelanite, turqoise, red jasper, blue agate and sugilte respectively.

Better still, each of the planets rotates around the Sun at the watches centre in real time - meaning it will take three months for Mercury to make a rotation (and a year for Earth, obviously). But Saturn will take more than 29 years to make one revolution around the rose gold sun.

As for the other planets, it's probably for the best they aren't included. Pluto takes 248 years to complete its solar rotation, and it might be sort of depressing to catch only a quarter of that movement in your lifetime.

The watch is available 'on request' for an undisclosed, but probably exceptionally high price. There are just 396 in the world, and given the amount of coverage it's received online you'll probably do well to find one anywhere.
