The Chandra X-Ray Space Observatory has just photographed some kind of terrifying hyperspace portal deathship in deep space.
(Yes, it's true that the team behind the image say it's just a picture of a massive spinning black hole magnified by another galaxy. But when you're talking in terms of super-dense singularities where the laws of physics and time break down into tiny tangled tendrils of nothing, you can afford to have a sense of drama.)
The picture shows a supermassive black hole within a quasar located about 6 billion light years from Earth.
The reason it actually looks like a massive hyperspace portal is that the galaxy in front of it is acting like a lens - bending and magnifying the black hole which lies billions of miles behind it, and which is spinning at half the speed of light.
Needless to say, the actual science revealed by - or illustrated by - this picture is way more interesting than whatever sub-Star Wars fluff we can come up with. You're better off heading right over to the observatory's website to learn about the implications of this interesting new area of cosmological science.
