An Oklahoma man spent two days stuck underground in a storm drain after chasing a $20 bill.

So desperate was the gent for the cash, he climbed into the network of tunnels after dropping it through a grill on the street.

He then became hopelessly lost and was left wandering around calling for help.

Eventually a group of schoolchildren heard his cries and phoned for police who removed a drain cover.

Sergeant John Chelenza, said: "We see a gentleman down in the bottom of it and it seemed that he had been down there a couple of days.

"That's the first time in going on 28 years that we have found somebody down in a storm drain."

Officer in training, Alicia Redding, added: "I was amazed. I was confused how he had gotten down there and amazed that he was still okay.

"He did not remember what day it was. He wasn't sure how long he had been down there. He was pretty dehydrated and not really sure the time the date."

The unnamed man sustained a bump to the head during his ordeal which officials said he was lucky to survive as usually a map is needed to navigate the tunnels.

They added he owed his life to the children that heard him.

Unfortunately, he did not find his $20 bill.
