Hangover Cures: Could This Blitz Your St Patrick's Day Hangover?

Can This Cure Your St Patrick's Day Hangover?

This morning, some of you may be invoking Jesus Christ rather than St Patrick as you peel your head off the pillow. But you have to go to work, so what are you going to do about it?

Some of us swear by Lucozade while for others, the perfect hangover drink is a cup of black coffee.

But if you want the *official* drink that can lessen the effects of a badger trying to eat your brain, the answer is: Sprite.

Chinese scientists, reported The Daily Mail, looked at 57 drinks from herbal teas to carbonated beverages, and looked at what causes a hangover.

They found out that the process of the body breaking down the alcohol is what causes nausea and headaches, rather than the alcohol itself.

Here's the science bit: after drinking, our bodies release an enzyme called dehydrogenase (ADH), which turns the ethanol in the alcohol into acetaldehyde. This then turns into acetate because of another enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).

Acetate isn't harmful and actually might be responsible for some of the positive after effects of drinking alcohol, wrote Chemistry World, but the length of time the acetaldehyde stays in the body is what causes the nasty side effects.

Herbal drinks were found to actually make a hangover worse, as it slowed down the acetaldehyde turning into acetate - so you feel worse for longer. But Sprite was found to speed up the process of turning the ethanol into acetate.
