For two of European football's greatest clubs, Manchester United and Bayern Munich's history is as short as it is eventful.

Their quarter-final second leg in the Champions League tonight will mark their 11th competitive meeting, nearly 16 years on from their first encounter.

And Solskjaer has won it...

Before that night in Barcelona, the clubs were drawn with each other in the 1998-99 Champions League Group of Death, which included Barcelona and Brondby. Back then, only the group winners were guaranteed to qualify.

Enjoy the history lesson...

United recovered from Giované Elber's blatantly offside goal to lead through strikes from Dwight Yorke, flourishing alongside Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes. However, a Peter Schmeichel blunder culminated in a Sheringham own goal late on to give Bayern a draw. Sheringham still almost nicked it but was denied by Oliver Kahn. Kahn would not be able to do likewise later that season...

Back when the Champions League consisted of just six groups, the two best runners-up would qualify as the group winners. United, unbeaten and a point behind Bayern going into their final game, took the lead thanks to Roy Keane but Hasan Salihamidžić scrambled in a leveller after the break. United and Real Madrid, the group stage's top scorers with 20 goals and 17, progressed as the best number twos.

"Can Manchester United score? They always score!" "The big goalie's coming up." "Peter Schmeichel is forward." "Can he score another in Europe, he's got one already." "Beckham... in towards Schmeichel, it will come for Dwight Yorke. Cleared. Giggs with the shot... SHERINGHAM! Name. On. The. Trophy." "Is this their moment? Beckham... into Sheringham... AND SOLSKJAER HAS WON IT!."

A wonderfully crafted Ruud van Nistelrooy goal was extinguished by Sergio again (what is it with Brazilian Bayern players against United?).

The only goalless encounter between the teams came in March 2002, as they both qualified for the quarter-finals.

Wayne Rooney gave United the lead inside the first minute against a vulnerable Bayern side, but Sir Alex Ferguson's pragmatic tactics - and a Gary Neville nightmare - backfired. Neville's concession of a free-kick enabled Franck Ribéry to equalise, via a deflection, and after Nemanja Vidić rattled the crossbar Ivica Olić pounced on the dithering Patrice Evra to win the game late on.

United promised a European night to rank with their demolitions of Porto and Roma in 1997 and 2007 when they raced into a 2-0 lead inside seven minutes. Nani, enjoying one of his finest hours in a red shirt, made it 3-0 in the 41st minute but Michael Carrick, about to endure one of his worst nights in a red shirt, feebly allowed Olić to pull one back. After the pause, Rafael da Silva was sent off, Bayern won a corner, Carrick was caught ball-watching and Arjen Robben volleyed into the corner of the net to send Bayern through on away goals.

Billed as the biggest mis-match between the sides, a blunt Bayern side struggled against an organised United rearguard and were in danger of a surprise defeat when Nemanja Vidić's arched header gave United the advantage. Bastian Schweinsteiger extinguished the lead 10 minutes later before he was sent off.
