When you push through the doors of an office, you can no longer be certain the inside will seem familiar.

Sure, it could be the same old dreary formation of small desks, strip lighting and a single plant by reception. But these days there's a good chance this won't be the case.

Miserable working environments (think The Office's Wernham Hogg Paper Company) are gradually being updated, as vastly successful modern companies such as Google not only disrupt technology, but our working lives.

Google instinctively understood their multi-talented computer engineers would need a different style of work environment. A place that nurtured and respected their programming zeal, and encouraged further innovation, without crushing their spirits.

As a result, the company's offices have music rooms, swim-in-place pools, pool tables, mini golf, arcade games and brainstorming rooms, plus super comfortable working spaces.

Other business leaders, such as Arianna Huffington, have also challenged how we approach the office.

At Huffington Post HQ in New York, there are two nap rooms, affectionally nicknamed Napquest I and Napquest II.

Employees sign up in advance for one-hour nap times and the rooms are always full, says Arianna.

"I think it's a great thing to have in the office," she told Business Insider.

"Ultimately, at work, the most important thing is our energy. It's not exactly how many hours we are sitting at our desks, but how present are we when we're there."

While not every company can afford a nap room, there are still plenty of ways to breathe life into your working day.

Could any of these clever gadgets transform your office into a better space to work?
