The picture painted by the defence on the morning Oscar Pistorius first took the stand was of a brave and religious athlete, who had overcome many obstacles in his life and who deeply loved the woman he would kill.

The paralympian opened with a declaration of sorrow and regret, directed at Reeva Steenkamp's grief-stricken family, promising he "loved" their daughter, the daughter he shot through the door of the bathroom at his Pretoria home.

We know that Pistorius will argue that he did not shoot Steenkamp deliberately, and that he mistook her for an intruder. The prosecution will argue it was premeditated murder.

Here are nine things we didn't know, from an emotional day in court.
