Watch: Spring Break Party Turns Into Full Scale Riot

Around 100 people were arrested and more than 40 were hospitalised after a spring break in California, attended by 15,000 students, turned into a riot.

Members of the crowd in Isla Vista, southern California, started throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police officers, lighting fires and damaging police vehicles on Saturday night, according to the Associated Press. Police reportedly used tear gas, pepper spray and foam to disperse the crowd.

One police officer was hit in the face with a brick, with the situation being dubbed "ridiculous".

Kelly Hoover of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said: "It was an emergency situation where we had to call in mutual aid.

"They have had civil disturbances before in Isla Vista, but it has been many years since something like this.

"It really was ridiculous."
