Right now Mars is making its closest approach to Earth since 2007 and until at least 2016.
And while that event will not signify the end of days, it might look quite neat in the Northern Hemisphere sky, if you can find it.
Luckily it's not that hard. The bright red planet will be an obvious target in Virgo, rising as soon as it gets dark in the southern sky. Here's a handy guide to seeing the planet through a telescope.

Meanwhile according to some conspiracy theorists, it's possible that Mars could be looking back. Sadly the discovery of a 'bright light' on the surface has since been dismissed by Nasa as nothing unusual.
