Freelee The Banana Girl Credits Raw Vegan Diet For Her Weight Loss And Health

'I Eat Up To 51 Bananas Per Day': Woman Credits Raw Vegan Diet For Her Weight Loss

Meet Freelee, the self-proclaimed 'diet guru', who eats as many as 51 bananas per day in a bid to stay slim and healthy - unsurprisingly she's also known as The Banana Girl.

The YouTube and Instagram star advocates an extreme raw vegan diet that is low-processed, low-fat, high-carb.

Her diet involves eating large quantities of fruit in a single sitting such as 20 bananas or four mangoes - it is estimated that fruit makes up some 97% of her daily intake.

She claims her lifestyle helped her to lose a total of 40 pounds and cleared up health problems such as acne, chronic fatigue syndrome and poor digestion.

Freelee isn't the only fruit fanatic to become infamous to Instagram. Loni Jane, the blogger who received widespread criticism for following the 80/10/10 diet while pregnant, has amassed more than 225,000 followers on the social media site.

But while Freelee and Loni Jane may list the benefits of their diet, others have been critical.

The Daily Beast question whether Freelee's habits may mirror that of an eating disorder, while others warn against the effects of eating mainly fruit.

Speaking to HuffPost UK Lifestyle, Alice Mackintosh, nutritionist at The Food Doctor says: "Getting plenty of fruit and veg is one thing, but living off it is quite another. Though it will contain lots of goodness, there are things that fruit and veg will not contain, namely protein, which is fundamental for the functioning of the body."

Jo Travers at The London Nutritionist adds: "This diet is high in sugar from all the fruit, low in protein which is essential for cell structure, and hormone and enzyme production, both critical for health."
