'Mario Kart 8' Details Revealed Ahead Of May 30 Release Date: New Items, Characters, Options

New "Mario Kart 8' Details Unveiled!

Nintendo has released a bunch of new information about Mario Kart 8 a month before the game's release.

In an unscheduled 'Nintendo Direct' web conference Nintendo unveiled a raft of new characters and items.

'Mario Kart 8' for the Wii U will be released on 30 May. In our extensive preview we said that the game is already shaping up to be an incredible release, with beautiful, rich HD graphics, inventive new tracks and concepts and the same core Mario Kart fun.

But now that prospect looks even better, with the new info released today. Specifically, Nintendo announced:

  • There will be a 'free game' promo for anyone registering a copy of Mario Kart 8 on the Club Nintendo website, which will bag you one free download code for any of 10 games, including Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3.
  • A new item - the Super Horn: "The new Super Horn blows away all other items – literally. Sounding the Super Horn issues forth a sonic shock wave that blasts away everything in the vicinity, including other drivers, Red Shells and even Spiny Shells."
  • Another new item, the Crazy Eight: "Mario Kart 8 also introduces the Crazy Eight, a swirl of eight different items that lucky players can use one by one."
  • Two new characters, bringing the total to 30: "New heavyweight driver Pink Gold Peach glows with a golden light and makes a shiny counterpart to Metal Mario, while the new Baby Rosalina shows up for a play date with other Baby characters. As in past Mario Kart games, players can again choose to play as their Mii characters, rounding out the field of racers to a total of 30."
