Samsung Dominates Smartwatch Market (Without Selling That Many)

Turns Out It's Not That Hard To 'Dominate' Smartwatch Sales

Figures suggest that Samsung is "absolutely dominating" the smartwatch market, according to reports - despite not really selling all that many.

A report by Strategic Analysis said that 250% more smartwatches were shipped in the last three months, and that Samsung sold most of them.

"The market was driven heavily by Samsung and its Galaxy Gear model, which is outperforming all major rivals like Motorola and Pebble," said analyst Neil Mawston.

So how many is that?

Not that many.

Mawston said he thinks about 700,000 watches were shipped to stores and that 500,000 were from Samsung.

But even that isn't the full picture - not all those watches were necessarily sold, and definitely not at full price. In the UK, for instance, Samsung's original Galaxy Gear smartwatches were eventually given away with Note 3 devices, and while its more recent Gear 2 and Gear Fit bands gained better reviews, they are also being subsidised alongside the S5 smartphone.

For now it seems like the vast majority of consumers are unconvinced they even need a smartwatch. Apple's upcoming entry into the market - whatever form it takes - and the release of Google's brilliant looking Android Wear line might change that quickly, but we will have to wait and see.
