Paul McCartney has been admitted into hospital in Japan after suffering from a viral infection, according to reports.

The former Beatles singer recently cancelled concerts in Asia after being taken ill and according to Tokyo’s The Sankei Sports newspaper he is now being treated at a Tokyo hospital.

While the reported hospitalisation has not been confirmed by Sir Paul’s reps, fans have started gathering outside the Japan hospital.

After cancelling a number of concerts earlier this week, a message was posted on the musician’s website stating that he was postponing the gigs on “doctors’ orders”.

A message from Paul read: “Thank you so much for your kind messages of support. I’m so very touched. Unfortunately my condition has not improved overnight.”

“I was really hoping that I'd be feeling better today,” he added. “I'm so disappointed and sorry to be letting my fans down.”

The singer arrived in Asia to perform his ‘Out There!’ concerts earlier this month.

The US leg of the tour, beginning on 14 June, is still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
