Gareth Bale secured Real Madrid's 10th European Cup with an extra-time winner in an exhausting Champions League final against rivals Atlético Madrid.
Bale nodded into an empty net after Thibaut Courtois denied the indefatigable Angel di María in the 110th minute of the Lisbon final to defeat n Atlético side decimated by Sergio Ramos' equaliser.
Atlético defender Diego Godín, whose header clinched their first La Liga title since 1996 last week, looked to have registered the only goal at the Estadio da Luz to record the Rojiblancos' first European Cup.
However, just like in their only previous final appearance 40 years ago, Atlético were denied in added-time. Ramos stooped to meet Luka Modrić's corner in the 93rd minute, becoming a new generation's Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, the Bayern Munich defender who denied Atléti in 1974.

The injured Atlético forward Arda Turan, clad in a suit in the first-half, was seen in a full kit at full-time, having prematurely choreographed his celebrations to the colour of the red and white. However it will be the whites who party into the night.
Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo both struck late on to flatter Real, as Atléti boss Diego Simeone disrupted play to confront Dutch referee Björn Kuipers. The Argentine was enraged at the five minutes added on to regulation time, and was sent off for his antics.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti now joins the pantheon of coaches to have won the European Cup with two clubs. Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord and Hamburg), José Mourinho (Porto and Internazionale), and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid and Bayern) had succeeded before him.
The Italian's third European success, following his 2003 and 2007 triumphs with AC Milan, means only he and the great Liverpool manager Bob Paisley have won three European Cups.
For Bale, it caps a memorable first season in the Spanish capital. The 24-year-old scored Real's winner in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in April and his goal has ended Real's 12-year wait for la décima.
