How To Handle Father's Day If You Don't Have A Dad

How To Handle Father's Day If You Don't Have A Dad (Or If You Have A Crappy One)

Father's Day can be a polarising occasion for those who don't have fathers anymore or have a bad or absent relationship with them.

Although there is less hoopla over the day, which takes place on 15 June, than Mother's Day, there is no avoiding the endless adverts, special roped-off sections in supermarkets and department stores and greeting cards.

When it comes to dealing with difficult dads, psychotherapist Karin Sieger wrote on HuffPost UK Lifestyle: "Allowing ourselves to become less rigid and entertaining the belief that we you have done the best we could is an important start in addressing some of the difficulties we may experience on an occasion like... Father's Day.

"The second step is to realise and accept that we cannot change others, but only ourselves. Ultimately, we all have choices and we are responsible for our individual lives and the consequences of the choices we make - that goes for our parents as much as for our children (especially if grown up)."

In this video from HuffPost Live, guests talk about how they handle the occasion.
