Inspired By Paralysed Wife, Man Creates Awesome Wheelchair Tanks

Man Builds 'Tankchair' For Paralysed Wife

Brad Soden isn't a man that believes in the word 'can't', when he sees a problem he wants to solve it. So when his wife had a car accident that left her paralysed from the waist down, he refused to let that inhibit any part of her life.

In a report to Business Week Soden explains how, with little or no engineering skills, he set about creating a wheelchair that would allow her to go anywhere she wanted.

"Her exact words were, 'Go on without me.' I find that unacceptable, so I told her I would build her something. It took me two years and a bunch of beer in my garage to figure out the first model, but since then -- with now my applied science -- we've been making leaps and bounds."

Battery-powered, the Tankchair as it's being known is expected to last as long as any car with tank tracks helping it overcome almost all terrain from sand to snow.

Despite the success of Tankchair Soden isn't in it for the money, in fact all the money he makes from each Tankchair goes straight back into developing a better one.

"I get more pleasure watching other people have fun. You see a kid smile, or you see happiness, and the tears of it ... I can't really describe it. Man, I can't tell you. It's just really cool."
