Marouane Fellaini's torrid Manchester United career could be over less than a year after he became the club's fourth most expensive player in their history.

Fellaini, signed for £27.5 million, emerged as a major scapegoat of United's disastrous campaign. Although hampered by a wrist injury earlier in the season, Fellaini cut a cumbersome figure in his preferred defensive midfield role and was a victim of his association with David Moyes, who brought him to Everton from Standard Liege in 2008.

The 26-year-old failed failed to score for the Reds all season and United are prepared to make a £12.5m loss on the midfielder.

The Times say incoming United coach Louis van Gaal has instructed United to cut their losses of the Belgian, currently preparing for the World Cup, with the midfielder regarded as too ambling to fit into Van Gaal's preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Bought on summer transfer deadline day, Fellaini was the first central midfielder United had signed in six years, and only Dimitar Berbatov (£30.75m), Rio Ferdinand (£29.1m) and Juan Sebástian Verón had cost United more at the time.
