Liverpool Target Edinson Cavani - Transfer Talk

Could Edinson Light Up Liverpool's Summer?

A combination of Luis Suárez's sale, Daniel Sturridge's injury and Rickie Lambert's finishing has intensified Liverpool's need for another striker, and after Monaco gave them short shrift over Radamel Falcao Ian Ayre has taken his motorbike north and to the doorstep of that other French moneybags outfit.

Edinson Cavani has been a shadow of his Napoli self at Paris Saint-Germain but his agent says the 27-year-old has generated interest from Manchester United, Arsenal and now, reportedly, Liverpool.

Cavani joined PSG knowing he would not be The Man, a role the peripatetic Zlatan Ibrahmimović has to fill wherever he plays, and was a shadow of his Napoli self in Paris last year. An underwhelming World Cup prolonged the Uruguayan's slump and he has now appeared on Liverpool's radar.

Oh, and any excuse to post this Cavani goal...

The Reds are close to finalising Daniel Agger's departure from Anfield, too, with Arsenal and Barcelona both keen on the Dane.

Thomas Vermaelen would prefer to play for Louis van Gaal than Luis Enrique, while Manchester United have also been linked with Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia. Juan Cuadrado is back, too, and being touted as a £36 million Van Gaal signing. Daley Blind cropped up yesterday, and there is more on his possible move to United today as well as more Arturo Vidal chit-chat.

If Real Madrid want Petr Čech they can give Chelsea Raphãel Varane. One of José Mourinho's favourite surrogate sons, the Portuguese brought Varane to Madrid in 2011 and one of his final controversial acts at the Bernabéu was to boast about the Frenchman's credentials whilst simultaneously humiliating Pepe.

Mourinho and Varane: An unashamed father-and-son bond

Another man Mourinho signed at Real, Sami Khedira, is out of contract next summer and Real are reportedly desperate to offload him before the end of this transfer window. Form an orderly queue, gents.

Manchester City's solid summer activity could continue with the sale of that other nondescript midfielder, Javi García. They could get £22m for the Spaniard and Jack Rodwell.

Kieran Richardson, Philippe Senderos and Joe Cole: those are the three free transfers Aston Villa have sealed this summer. If the trio spell doom, then Aly Cissokho merely expands the font size, even though he will actually cost something.

Fabio Borini is still digging his heels in the mud as Liverpool try to drag him to Sunderland and Leicester City have offered Esteban Cambiasso a £5m contract.
