A disturbing court case in France alleges that a 19-year-old woman was crucified in a ritual that was meant to 'get rid of the devil inside her'.

Metro reports that the teenager, known as Antoinette, was discovered 'barely alive' in a flat in Paris where she had been tortured by three men and a woman, including her ex-boyfriend Eric Deron.

The trio are being tried for kidnapping, torture and barbarism.

The prosecution accused the defendants of tying up the woman in a crucifixion-style position and leaving her like that for seven days.

Jacques Bourdais, who is representing the accused in court, said: "To them, she was possessed, that is why they did not call a doctor.

"You call a doctor when someone is sick, when someone is possessed you exorcise them."

The defendants denied they had done anything wrong and said Antoinette had been a willing party in the exorcism. The case will finish on Friday.
