A dad-of-three is fighting for his life in hospital after he was attacked for shouting at a speeding motorist to slow down near children playing on a quiet residential street.
Paul Currie, 40, apparently gestured to the driver to take more care on Sunday afternoon.
The road-rage driver then stopped and got out of his 4 x 4 and punched Paul, sending him crashing to the floor before driving off.
The dad was taken to hospital and treated for a serious head injury as police arrested a 25-year-old following the assault in Dudley, West Midlands.
According to the Mirror, witnesses said Paul was walking home from a darts match at his local pub. There were children playing on the pavement and Paul had gestured for the speeding motorist to slow down.
A neighbour said: "He was attacked for no reason whatsoever.
All he did was tell an idiot driver to slow down and he nearly loses his life. It's disgusting.
"We hope Paul pulls through so he can see justice served. He's a cracking fella and wouldn't hurt a fly."
Another resident, Carrie-Ann Bridges, 23, said: "Paul was coming up the street and the car was going in the opposite direction.
"I didn't see the attack but I looked out of the window and saw him lying on the ground. A couple of other neighbours had rushed out to help him."
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Detective Inspector Gary Dring, of West Midlands police, said: "This was a vicious assault which has left the victim with a very serious head injury.
"The vehicle involved was a distinctive white 4x4 with black roof bars and silver alloy wheels."
Another resident said an increasing number of drivers are breaking the speed limit in the street. He added: "People go really fast, much too quick for such a built-up area. It was brave of him to stand up to the driver but you still don't expect that response."
