Facebook has finally changed its policy to allow photos of mothers breastfeeding to be posted on the site.
Previously, breastfeeding photos were deemed 'pornographic' and therefore violated Facebook's terms.
The change in policy is a victory for the 'Free the Nipple' campaign, organised by friends Soraya Chemaly, Jaclyn Friedman and Laura Bates in America.
The policy change has been kept relatively quiet, with a slight change to wording on Facebook, which hasn't been widely publicised. The new wording regarding breastfeeding reads:
Does Facebook allow photos of mothers breastfeeding?
Yes. We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful and we're glad to know that it's important for mothers to share their experiences with others on Facebook. The vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policies.
Please note that the photos we review are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other Facebook members who complain about them being shared on Facebook.
Previously, Facebook's policy stated:
'Photos that show the fully exposed breast where the child is not actively engaged in nursing do violate the Facebook Terms.'
