How To Make The Perfect Cosmopolitan

Call it the Sex and the City effect, but there's something about a Cosmopolitan that just says, 'girl's night out'.

Thanks to New York City's master mixologist Dale DeGroff, the Cosmo has also become a cocktail classic. Mayfair restaurant Novikov shares its in-house recipe from DeGroff (featuring the all-important flamed orange zest) below:

Ingredients:

40ml Absolut Citron Vodka

15ml Triple Sec ( or Cointreau)

20ml Cranberry juice

10ml Fresh squeezed lime juice

Garnish: Flamed orange zest

Shaken and Strained method:

Prepare a thumb nail sized orange zest being careful to remove the white pith from the back and place to one side.

Fill the large metal part of the cocktail shaker with ice and then measure the ingredients into the shaker in order, starting with the non-alcoholic ingredients first followed by liqueurs and the finally the main base spirit.

Shake very hard in a length ways motion before double straining into a frozen cocktail glass.

With the outside of the orange zest facing up and over the cocktail, not into it, hold the flame of the light close to the drink and flex the zest so the oils release spray through the flame and scent the top of the drink.

Place the zest into the drink and serve.
