Know Your Place, Peyton! America Releases Its Top 100 Names For Baby Girls

Our friends Across the Pond have just released their list of newborns' most popular names and, to be honest, the top 10 is pretty dull. Sophia, Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Blah, Blah, Blah-de-Blah.

But look a little deeper into the top 100 and there are some little gems that we'd quite like to see adopted here in the UK.

Our personal favourite is Nevaeh – yes, that's Heaven, backwards (though there's no Lleh, for some reason).

And Trinity, Genesis and Destiny all have a certain Biblical proportion about them. And just to show you can never have too many open vowels in a moniker, how about Kaylee, Aaliyah, Arianna, Alexa, Makayla, Kayla and Gianna.

My personal favourite, though, is Peyton. For a child should always know its Place! LOL (no, that's not a name, just a trendy expression).

Anywaaaaaaay, this latest list of names comes from the Social Security Administration in the United States, which releases its list of registered names every year.

The Top 10 Names for Girls in 2012 were:

A writer from the U.S, website FemGuide (now THERE'S a name) wrote: "Many of these names are classic and also have an old-world feeling to them. Elizabeth has been popular as a first name and middle name for generations, and Liz is a great nickname for girls.

"Lily and Grace are also old-world and classic, iconic feminine names.

"Samantha may be popular due to the character of the same name on Sex and the City, which may be why it's a popular name for girls today."

And the site offers this brilliant (sic) advice: "If you're looking for a trendy name for your little girl, remember to choose something that is unique and personal but also something she can live with for the rest of her life."

And yes, I do see the irony of all the sarcasm in this article is coming from a man called Keith!
