TV chef Paul Hollywood and his wife are trying to patch up their marriage after he confessed to an affair with an American TV presenter.

The charming blue-eyed Liverpudlian Great British Bake Off judge revealed he still loves his wife, Alexandra, and accepted that he had made 'the biggest mistake of my life' by cheating on her with Marcela Valladolid, 34, co-presenter of the US version of the show.

He told Richard Bacon on Radio Five Live: "I had an affair in the States. It was the biggest mistake of my life - because actually I still love my wife... we are talking, working together but it's going to take time."

Hollywood was widely criticised and ridiculed - over the very public revelations about his relationship with Ms Valladolid - something he said had 'shocked' him.

And he had previously revealed that the stress of the fall-out had made his 11-year-old son Joshua sick with stress and nose bleeds.

He said at the time: "My son got quite ill, nose bleeds, he was quite upset - and I don't want to bring that back. My son is my life.

"It is my fault and that's why he went through what he went through. That's my biggest scare."

Shortly after they split up, Alexandra, 49, said it was a 'complete shock' when he left her after 15 years of marriage.

She said at the time: "I love my husband and I was - and still am - very proud of what he has achieved, but there is no going back. I just want this finished with and to move on."

But it seems that she has now had a change of heart, although Paul said the prospect of them getting back together was still early days.

Flirty Paul – who has also been accused of giving preferential treatment to GBBO baker, former model Ruby Tandoh, told Richard Bacon he regretted the fame the show had brought him but accepted the criticism.

He said: "I was shocked about the whole thing kicking off the way it did... but I deserved it and I've taken it. It was my punishment."

But he added: "At the end of the day, we are moving on and I am in a much better place now."
