Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Trends: The Animal Motif

Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Trends: The Animal Motif

When it comes to fashion and animals there's serious style chemistry, from prints and motifs to accessories.

Although cats, puppies and pugs are going nowhere fast this Spring/Summer (Vivienne Westwood showcased kittens during her LFW catwalk show and Fashion East went cray-cray for dogs and rabbits), 2014 has got five other species on its mind.

Check this list of animal trends for next season. Get ahead of the game and scoop yourself something quirky and new...

1. It's all horseplay

As it's the Chinese Year of the horse, get set to see a whole lot of giddy-up gear. Less jodphurs, more exquisite equestrian styles across clothes and accessories.

Not only has Cara Delevingne set the kooky tea party scene with a pony called Dusty for Mulberry's Spring 2014 campaign, but runway gal Edie Campbell is actually quite the horsewoman.

2. Roaring beauty

Chanel's new "Sous le Signe du Lion" 58-piece collection of oh-so-fine jewellery is how to do sophisticated accessorising this year. Think diamonds and precious gemstones. Costly but classic.

As Coco Chanel herself was a Leo lady, this collection celebrates the lions of Venice and will display (along with bling her the "1932" collection) at the Arts Decoratifs Museum in Paris.

3. Creepy crawlies - the chic kind

Sophia Webster went all out for beautiful bug life in her presentation during London Fashion Week SS14 at TopShop Show Space. Get set for pretty polka dots and dainty butterfly wings, antenia hairdo optional obvs.

Matthew Williamson's runway during London Fashion Week also revelled in butterflies and dragonflies - who didn't love his floaty, ultra-feminine pieces? Nice sidestep from the OTT floral trend too.

4. Explore the safari

That whole animal safari scene stirred up serious heat during fashion week. Where did we see it? Tribal animal print was everywhere: Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenburg, Moncler, Orla Kiely, Katie Eary and the Whistles SS 14 lookbook is all about the fabulous flamingo feather print.

Zebra, giraffe, exotic birds - you name it, you'll be seeing it. Add this lot into the mix and you're guaranteed to have heads turning next season. In a good way.

5. Bunnies are still a thing

Cute? You betcha, with the ears to match. For real, the rabbit motif is for keeps this Spring/Summer - the Moschino and Fashion East catwalks proved it so.

To be fair it does have two strands: the innocent bunny in the head-lights, super-snug vibe and then the sexy bunny thing a la Kate Moss on Playboy's cover for their 60th anniversary.
