Er, Did Google's Street View Car Run Over A Dog?

The Google Street View car has travelled the entire globe with a simple mission: to capture and map the world in its entirety. It's travelled more than 300,000km of road in that cause, and there's lots more to go.

Thing is, the world is a pretty big place, and inevitably there were going to be some hiccups along the way.

The latest of these appears to have taken place in Chile.

Pictures have been released showing what looks like a dog walking towards the Google car and then lying down once the car has passed - suggesting that quite possibly; Google may have hit the dog.

So... did they?

The images can be seen at Meza Bell 2815-2861 in the Quinta Normal, Región Metropolitana of Chile.

This isn't the first time Google has been caught out by its own mapping service and has told MailOnline that it will be investigating the images to see if it was indeed an incident or just a dog rolling around on the ground.

"We've taken security measures and have guidelines in place to protect people, and animals, as we drive thousands of kilometers to bring useful and relevant information to maps users around the world,' it said.

We are reviewing the imagery to try to understand and maybe inform what happened."

There's every possibility that it was just a trick of the camera. In fact we're prepared to give Google the benefit of the doubt here.

For one thing the dog's position when lying down appears to shift between images - indicating it may have been basking in the sun before the car arrived, standing up when it came close.

Google's Street View has famously caught all kinds of weird stuff, including people 'having sex' but ultimately these turned out to be simply out of context shots.
