Speaking to the Radio Times, Simon talked about the now infamous orange and purple outfit that Cheryl wore for her US X Factor debut, and also made that weight comment.

"I haven't a clue why she turned up like that," he said. "I asked her manager, 'What's she wearing, what's happened to her hair?' She was nervous, shy, not in her comfort zone. She'd put on a bit of weight, but not loads. The only way I can describe it is that it wasn't Cheryl sitting in that seat."

According to the Express, Cheryl responded to the comment in an interview with Yahoo Celebrity, saying: "I heard this rumour and I think a gentleman should never speak about a woman's age or weight but that's only if you're educated on how to treat a woman.

"So, unlucky for him. And who listens to Simon Cowell these days anyway. Does anybody? I don't listen to him anymore."

However, Simon has defended the comment and said he was unhappy at how it came across in the interview.

According to the BBC, he said he was "upset" as the interview made him look "weight-ist", which, he says, he isn't.

By way of explanation, he said he was asked a question about Cheryl's weight and simply answered it.

But, he's probably learned, sometimes it's better to say nothing at all.
