If you're single and ready to mingle but unable or unwilling to forge a romantic relationship with another human being, then a 'virtual girlfriend' may be just the ticket.

It may sound seedy, but this isn't the kind of pay-per-view one visits late at night.

Instead, the virtual girlfriend is hired by the day and, according to Want China Times, can perform a range of services, such as texting or calling to wake customers up each morning, to listen to their worries, or wish them goodnight before bed.

The girlfriends are available on Taobao, China's leading shopping website, for as little as £1.20 per day (20-30 yuan).

They come in a range of personalities, including 'doll-like girls', 'mature women', and 'the girl next door'. No 'crazy, possessive, bitches' then. Dammit.

But fear not ladies, you can also hire a virtual boyfriend. The selection ranges from 'men in uniform' to 'comforting men'.

Any takers?
