Benedict Cumberbatch gave his parents a glitzy night out on the razz on Monday when he sent them both to the TV Choice Awards to pick up the award he won for 'Sherlock' on his behalf.

Well, it beats a sick note.

Benedict was nowhere to be seen at the bash at London's Hilton Park Lane so his mum, Wanda Ventham and dad, Timothy Carlton got to enjoy the free bar and take to the stage to collect their son's gong instead.

The 'Sherlock' star won Best Actor for his role as the super sleuth and the series also bagged the Best Drama Series award.

As he collected his son's award, Benedict's father said he'd like to thank Martin Freeman who plays Sherlock's sidekick Watson before joking: "I'm sure if he were here he would wish to thank his parents."
