Luton Airport Evacuation Security Scare Was Caused By Hair Straighteners

And The 'Suspicious Item' Behind The Luton Airport Bomb Scare Was...

Around 2,000 people were evacuated from Luton Airport on Monday due to a security threat that turned out to be triggered by... a pair of hair straighteners.

The "suspicious item" found in the terminal building at around 2pm on Monday was destroyed in a controlled explosion by a bomb disposal squad from Royal Logistic Corps.

But the potentially dangerous item was reported to simply be a pair of hair straighteners. They were found in the security search area of the airport. It is not clear why they caused the security alert.

The controlled explosion took place yesterday

All incoming flights to the Bedfordshire airport were suspended, roads were closed and thousands of passengers were ushered to the airport's car park area.

EasyJet said it diverted six flights to Stansted, Birmingham and Southend, and cancelled 41 flights as a result of the disruption.

Passengers were able to return to the airport around four hours after the evacuation.

Luton Airport now claims to be operating as usual after the security scare. It said in a statement: "Flights in and out of London Luton Airport are operating as normal following yesterday’s evacuation due to a security alert.

"For the latest flight status, please check with your airline."

But some flights this morning appear to be delayed.

The airport's live departure board showed a Thomson flight to the Spanish city of Reus set to depart at 5.50am today is estimated to leave at 8am, while an 8.30am flight to Palma de Mallorca on the same airline is estimated to depart at 10.40am.
