'Destiny' Is The Fastest Selling New Video Game In History

'Destiny' Just Made More Money Than You Can Possibly Imagine

'Destiny', the new RPG-shooter from Actvision and Halo-creators Bungie, famously cost a staggering $500 million to develop and market.

It took just 24 hours to make that back.

Activision said that with pre-sales and day one orders, added to 11,000 midnight sales events, the game has now sold more than $500 million worth of copies -- though how that breaks down in terms of formats, revenue and profit isn't clear.

Either way, Activision is claiming that the game is now the fastest-selling new franchise in history.

“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.

"This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up".

Activision added that it thinks Destiny is on track to make more than $1 billion over its lifetime.
