David Beckham has debuted his latest tattoo, and he seems to have taken inspiration from an unlikely source - Shawn Carter, better known as Jay Z.

The new ink is on the back of Becks' right hand, just above his fingers - one of the only strips of unmarked skin he has left. It reads: 'Dream big, be unrealistic', a quote attributed to Jay.

Though as an ex-England captain and multimillionaire, we're not sure exactly what dreams David has left to fulfill...

On the surface David, from Chingford, Essex, and the Brooklyn-born rapper may not appear to have a lot in common.

But it turns out the football legend and wife Victoria Beckham are big fans of another of the world's famous power couples - Jay Z and wife Beyoncé. Last month, David and Victoria were spotted at Bey/Jay concert at L.A's Rose Bowl stadium, part of the pair's On the Run tour.

The rap star's inspirational motto must have made a big impression, because an unusually excitable Victoria tweeted the quote the day after the show-stopping performance:

David got his first tattoo, a Gothic style 'Brooklyn', to mark the birth of his oldest son in 1999. Since then he's covered his upper body in dozens of tats, many dedicated to his family, admitting that he is 'addicted' to body art.

One of the most noticeable is the Roman numeral 'VII' inscribed on his inner right forearm - a nod not only to his former Manchester United and England number, but also to daughter Harper Seven.

Other tattoos include the names of sons Romeo and Cruz (he didn't really have much choice after the Brooklyn one, did he?), Sanskrit script spelling 'Victoria' on his inner left arm and a tribute to youngest child Harper across his left collarbone.

David was in New York to support his wife's fashion week collection and promote his partnership with Belstaff.
