Firefighters Practice Jumping Off Bridges To Stop Suicide In Brazil

Firefighters In Brazil Use A Very Interesting Method To Prevent Suicide

A recent World Health Organisation report has revealed that the suicide rate in Brazil has increased dramatically in the past 10 years.

For this reason, firefighters in Sao Paulo are being trained in a spectacular technique to prevent suicide using the city's bridges.

“This exercise is called the suicide jump, where we simulate a victim on the side of the bridge ready to jump” Diego Assuncao of the Sao Paulo Fire Department says in the video.

“In the victim’s moment of despair, the fireman jumps with a safety rope, catches the victim, controlling the fall thanks to the rope."

Although the highest suicide rates in the world are found in Lithuania, Russia and South Korea, authorities are concerned about how quickly number are increasing in Brazil.
