RAF Typhoon Going Supersonic Over Kent Captured On CCTV

The Moment Supersonic 'Explosion' Shook The Hell Out Of Southeast England

If you were in the southeast of England at around 4.40pm yesterday afternoon, there's a good chance you may have felt the building you were in shake from what one witness called a "massive explosion-like noise".

CCTV footage captured the moment the Typhoon jet broke the sound barrier, producing a loud bang that was heard in Kent, South London and East Sussex.

The footage was taken by Tweetdeck founder Iain Dodsworth at his home in Crowborough, East Sussex.

He said he thought the noise was his "whole house collapsing", while others described it as sounding like "an explosion". One woman in Bromley said her double glazing shook with the force of it.

Paul Dunlop said his house in Sevenoaks, Kent, shook with the "massive explosion-like noise", asking "WTF?" Kent resident Cleyton Tierney also said the "huge bang" shook his house.

The RAF apologised, saying it only flew at supersonic speeds when "absolutely necessary" and had to do it to "fulfill its quick reaction time".

After the cargo plane landed, it was established "everything was in order". The jet went up as "precautionary measure" after contact with the cargo plane was lost, Essex Police said.

A Soundcloud clip of a warning issued from the Typhoon to the Latvian aircraft said: "Matavia1605 from a Lima Nine Tango Four Seven. I am instructed for Her Majesty's Government of the United Kingdom to warn you that if you do not respond immediately to my orders you will be shot down."
