What Would Happen If Two Black Holes Collided? This.

What Happens When Black Holes Collide Is Hideously Amazing

What would happen if two black holes collided at the centre of the Milky Way?

Apparently, nothing good. And nothing very easy to understand either.

But figuring out the tortured maths involved in colliding two almost-infinitely dense points of matter is exactly the sort of thing that the Simulating Extreme Spacetimes project is set up to do.

SXS is dedicated to researching the ins and outs of hideously complicated space events, and then boiling them down into easy-to-watch videos for morons like us.

The result in this case is a pretty spectacular video which shows how light and matter would bend and swirl as the black holes met and interact.

How complicated is it? Well, so complicated that the researchers told Popular Science how the "equations blew up in their faces" until they got a handle on it.
